attribute NC_GLOBAL summary String Landfast in the Buoyard at Small Craft, this working research buoy is more than a landmark – it's a live window into the Keweenaw Waterway. The weather station was originally deployed on several metocean buoys across the Great Lakes with support from the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS). Now living shoreside, the station is affixed to a buoy hull donated by OTT Hydromet and hosted in partnership with Michigan Tech’s Great Lakes Research Center. Designed to share real-time weather data with the public, the station also serves as an approachable, hands-on learning tool in one of Hancock’s most active waterfront areas. Set alongside a public park and trail system, it fills a critical data gap in the Keweenaw Waterway, a stretch of water that previously had no near water-level weather observations, while inviting visitors to pause, observe, and connect with the science shaping life on the Great Lakes.
