The buoy is owned by the University of Michigan's Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research while maintained and deployed by Michigan Technological University's Great Lakes Research Center to enhance safety for recreational stakeholders, while providing valuable realtime observations for Great Lakes researchers and forecasters. Each year from about May 1 to November 1, this Sofar Spotter buoy will measure wave height and wave period, as well as surface temperature every 30 minutes, reporting these values once per hour. The buoy, owned and operated by the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, will advance the understanding of near-shore waters, alert the public to hazardous conditions, protect water quality and improve weather forecasts. The buoy provides real time wind and wave information, as well as temperature through the water column. The data helps make on-water recreation safer, provides anglers with key water temperature information, and improves modeling and forecasting. The buoy is outfitted with a meterological station that measures air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and solar radiation. A temperature string with sensors at one meter intervals measure water temperature from the surface to 6 m. A YSI 6600 data sonde with temperature, specific conductivity, and turbidity is positioned ~1 m below the surface. An ADCP is deployed on the bottom ~30 m horizontal distance from the surface buoy. The ADCP (Nortek AWAC) measures water velocity and wave height and direction. Annual operational cost is provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Coastal Management Program (Illinois CMP). The buoy was built and first deployed by LimnoTech, Inc., in 2018. The startup cost for purchase and initial deployment was possible through a grant award to Illinois CMP and ISGS from NOAA, Office of Coastal Management.
