It is important to note the concentrations measured at this point DO NOT represent the average concentration in the entire cross section. This location is known to have a strong lateral concentration gradient. The purpose of the instrument is to provide an idea of when sediment is present in the water column and when it is not. Known as Cleveland Water’s Crib buoy, it was originally deployed in 2010 through a USEPA Great Lakes Restorative Initiative grant administered by Great Lakes Observing System. The buoy is now maintained by Cleveland Water in partnership with Cleveland Water Alliance and LimnoTech. The island is composed of granite rock and rises nearly 60 feet above the surface of Lake Superior. The lighthouse began operation in 1869, was automated in 1937, and then was privately purchased and restored by Scott and Martine Holman in 1999. In 2009 Dr. John Lenters, then an associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, installed an eddy covariance system and weather station to measure lake evaporation and other atmospheric variables. The CB-1500 coastal data buoy is secured by a two-point mooring system over a mud substrate in 13 meters of water. The buoy is equipped with a solar-powered weather station and surface and near-bottom water quality sensors that collect data every 30 min, as well as a cellular modem for real-time data communication.
