Known as Cleveland Water’s Offshore buoy, it was originally deployed in 2010 through a USEPA Great Lakes Restorative Initiative grant administered by Great Lakes Observing System. The buoy is now maintained by Cleveland Water in partnership with Cleveland Water Alliance and LimnoTech. The lake is a shallow system that experiences seasonal algal blooms, which serves as one of the drivers for this moored buoy. The buoy also monitors meteorological conditions, temperature profiles, and selected water quality parameters. NCWB is deployed in 3 meters of water and utilizes cellular communication for real-time data transmission. Between 2014 and 2018, LimnoTech and GLOS worked with the water treatment plant system at Village of Marblehead to bring online the first version of the Lake Erie HABs monitoring network (the “Lake Erie HABs EWS”).
